Welcome to the world of Merry Mayhem, brought to Planet Patchwork by quilter, inventor, and internet entrepreneur, Merry May. Follow this mystery through six parts to make an old-fashioned quilt using new-fangled methods! This 52 x 66 quilt top will work up in a jiffy using paper foundations (if you wish) for the Flying Geese units. Use fabrics with a turn-of-the-century look to make it look like a real oldie.

Join Merry Mayhem for a venture into the unknown (for awhile, that is!). Instructions for this mystery quilt project are revealed bit by bit, so you wont have a clue to what youre making until youre nearly finished! Please read all instructions before beginning. Basic quiltmaking and rotary-cutting skills are assumed. All dimensions given include 1/4 seam allowances. Try to cut and piece as accurately as possible, using 1/4 seams unless indicated otherwise.
If you are using GRIDDED
GEESE©:
1. Using your utility scissors (for cutting paper), trim eight of your paper grid
sheets down from their original 12 rectangles, to 8 rectangles, cutting them apart on the
solid lines. Splice the leftover partial sheets (the ones with only 4 rectangles) together
with double-sticky tape to make a total of 12 square sheets of paper.
2. Pin each of your Light 11 squares, WRONG SIDE UP underneath each of the squares
of paper you just prepared. (Papers should be printed side up.)
3. Next, select ONE Red strip (5 1/8 x 12) and ONE Blue strip (same size) for
EACH of the Light fabrics you just pinned to the papers, and stack them up in sets.
4. For each set you just stacked up, cut ONE of the Dark strips (Red OR Blue -
doesnt matter which one) into TWO strips, each about 2 1/2 x 12, and
stack them up again. Leave the remaining strip intact as a 5 1/8 x 12 strip.
5. Follow the manufacturers instructions to make your Flying Geese units with
GRIDDED GEESE©, completing all twelve grid sheets this way. Rotary cut on the
solid lines of the grid sheets, then gently tear the paper foundations away.
If you are NOT using Gridded Geese©:
1. Sort your Light 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 rectangles into sets of eight (you should end up with twelve stacks).
2. Repeat with all of your Red and Blue 2 1/2 squares; you
should now have twelve stacks of each.
3. Next, select one Red stack, plus one Blue stack to go with each of your Light stacks.
Keep each of these combinations separated as you go along. One good way to do this is by
using a small zipper bag for each new combination stack. Working with one of these new
stacks at a time, make four Flying Geese units with the Red squares on their left side
(and the Blue squares on the right); and four more Flying Geese units with the Blue
squares on the left side, and the Red squares on the right. Do this for all twelve of your
stacks of rectangles and squares.

After all of your Flying Geese units have been completed, sew pairs of identical
Flying Geese units together so they look like the diagrams below. Press. Once again, sort
the sets into separate bags (or stacks), keeping each combination of Light, Red and Blue
separated from the others.
Make two like this ... and two like this.

Now you can go on to part 3!
