Merry Mayhem Presents:

Case #114: The Case of the Scrappy Queen, Part 2

Welcome to the world of Merry Mayhem, brought to Planet Patchwork by quilter, inventor, and internet entrepreneur, Merry May. Wave good-bye to your scraps as you make this beautiful queen-size quilt; or, use all new fabrics with a traditional Amish color scheme that'll really "float your boat!"

PART 2

Go back and find all of your Light 4 7/8" squares, plus all of your 3 7/8" Dark triangle units which you cut during Part 1 of this series.

Align the long edge of one of your Dark triangles with one of the raw edges of your Light square, lining up the corners of the triangle with the corners of the square IF you pretrimmed your triangle points with a Point Trimmer. If you did not pretrim, then be sure there is an equal amount of "overhang" on both ends of the Dark triangle after aligning it with your Light square, as shown below at right.

Once your first triangle is aligned, sew a 1/4" seam along the long edge of your triangle.

Repeat until you run out of Light squares. Then, turn these units around so the triangles you just attached are along the bottom edge of the units.Using your remaining Dark triangles, repeat this procedure until you run out of Dark triangles.

Press all of your seam allowances toward the Dark triangles. You should now have 84 units which look like this:p2gif3.gif (1422 bytes)
Divide these units into two equal piles with 42 units in each stack.

Sew with 1/4" seam once again. Repeat until the Light/Dark units in that stack are gone; then turn them around and add your remaining Medium #1 triangles to make a total of 42 "Diamond in a Square" units.

Press all of the seam allowances toward the triangles which you just attached. Each unit should now measure 6 1/2" square (unfinished).
(Please note: the drawing at right makes the units appear to be somewhat rounded; yours should be square!)

Repeat the above procedure using your Medium #2 triangles and your remaining stack of 42 Light/Dark units which you made at the beginning of Part 2 (above).
