Merry Mayhem Presents:

Case #114: The Case of the Scrappy Queen, Part 1

Welcome to the world of Merry Mayhem, brought to Planet Patchwork by quilter, inventor, and internet entrepreneur, Merry May. Wave good-bye to your scraps as you make this beautiful queen-size quilt; or, use all new fabrics with a traditional Amish color scheme that'll
really "float your boat!"

Please read all instructions before beginning. Try to be as accurate as possible. All dimensions given include 1/4" seam allowances, unless
otherwise noted. Drawings are not to scale.

FABRICS

Avoid obvious directional prints, unless you don't care which way they end up pointing. Pre-wash and iron all fabrics. Good-quality 100% cotton is recommended. When we made our sample for this series, we chose to use all solid fabrics in a traditional Amish color scheme. Therefore, the yardages given are in case you wish to  use all new fabric. Please feel free to substitute scraps as you wish, though. The results will still be delightful, and your scrap box(es) will thank us for it!!!

Light: This is your "background" fabric. You'll need a total of 2 1/2 yards of it. If you wish to use a traditional Amish color scheme, we would suggest using some sort of neutral color here; or, choose a subdued blue or blue-green. You don't want anything too flashy here. If you'd rather not use this sort of color scheme, then you're welcome to substitute scraps; just make sure they all have good contrast with your other fabrics (mediums & darks). Or, treat yourself to some new fabric and go find a nice, swirly light print!

Medium #1: Just as it sounds, a fabric (or fabrics) with a Medium value. Be sure there is some contrast between this fabric and your Light(s). If using all new fabric, you will need 1 3/4 yards of it.

Medium #2: A darker medium-value fabric which coordinates with your Medium #1, and which also has contrast with your Light fabric. If using new fabric, you will need 2 1/4 yards of it. We might offer a suggestion to perhaps choose a darker shade of your Medium #1 fabric(s).

Dark: This one should have strong contrast with all of your other fabrics. We might suggest that you choose a dark solid color (or colors) in order to maximize the contrast here. If you wish to have this fabric included in one of your major borders, you'll need a total of 6 3/4 yards of it; if you'd rather wait until later to choose your border fabric, then you can start with 3 3/4 yards for now. Even if you choose to use a single color here, we suggest that you include a piece or two of fabric from a different bolt, just to add more interest. For example, if you choose to use solid black or navy, use fabrics from a couple of different bolts. You'll be surprised to find that,      although both fabrics are technically the same color, subtle differences will occur in different dye lots.

OTHER NOTIONS:

A recommended time-saver is a single roll of a product called Triangles on a Roll in the 3" (finished) size. They are available from Schoolhouse Enterprises. However, this product is NOT required, and alternative instructions will be provided during Part 1 of this series.

Another handy tool is Judy Martin's "Point Trimmer."  It's not really a ruler, although it's made of 1/8" plexiglas. It's for pre-trimming the points on triangle units. (You'll be using quite a few of them while making this project! OK - yes, that's a clue!) Point Trimmers also happen to be available from Schoolhouse Enterprises. (It's not required; just highly recommended.)

Don't stop now! Part 1 Cutting instructions begin on the next page....
