Part 3 – Emerging Gems
We will be making a total of four blocks in this part.
There will be 4 different blocks and placement of colors is
key.
1. Sew one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle Fabric C and one 2
1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle Fabric A together. See diagram 9
for placement. Press and label Unit 6. Repeat three (3)
more times for a total of four Unit 6's. Measurement check
Unit should measure 4 1/2" square.
2. Sew one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle Fabric A and one 2
1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle Fabric E together. See diagram 10
for placement. Press and label Unit 7. Repeat eleven (11)
more times for a total of twelve Unit 7's. Measurement
check Unit should measure 4 1/2" square.
3. Sew one 4 7/8" half square triangle (HST) Fabric A and
one 4 7/8" half square triangle (HST) Fabric F together.
See diagram 11 for placement. Press and label Unit 8.
Repeat nine (9) more times for a total of ten Unit 8's.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" square.
4. Sew one 4 7/8" half square triangle (HST) Fabric A
and one 4 7/8" half square triangle (HST) Fabric C
together. See diagram 12 for placement. Press and label
Unit 9. Repeat one (1) more time for a total of two Unit
9's. Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".
To make Emerging Gems Block 1 sew the following together:
5. One 4 1/2" square Fabric A, Unit 7, Unit 8. See
diagram 13a for placement. Press and label Row 1. Label
this row TOP. Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2"
x 12 1/2".
6. Unit 7, one 4 1/2" square Fabric D, one Unit 6. See
diagram 13b for placement. Press and label Row 2.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
7. Unit 8, Unit 7 and Unit 8. See diagram 14a for
placement. Press and label Row 3. Measurement check Unit
should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
8. Sew rows together as shown in diagram 14b. Press,
label Emerging Gems Block 1 and set aside. Measurement check
Unit should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".
To make Emerging Gems Block 4 sew the following together:
9. Unit 8, Unit 6, Unit 8. See diagram 15a for
placement. Label this row TOP. Press and label Row 1.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
10. Unit 7, one 4 1/2" square Fabric D, Unit 7. See
diagram 15b for placement. Press and label Row 2.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
11. Unit 8, Unit 7 and one 4 1/2" square Fabric A. See
diagram 16a. Press and label Row 3. Measurement check Unit
should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
12. Sew the rows together as shown in diagram 16b.
Measurement check Unit should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".
13. Press and label Emerging Gem Block 4 and set aside.
To make Emerging Gems Block 2 sew the following together:
14. Unit 8, Unit 7 and one 4 1/2" square Fabric A. See
diagram 17 for placement. Press and label Row 1. Mark this
row TOP. Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12
1/2".
15. Unit 7, one 4 1/2" square Fabric D, Unit 7. See
diagram 18 for placement. Press and label Row 2.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
16. Unit 9, Unit 7, Unit 8. See diagram 19 for
placement. Press and label Row 3. Measurement check Unit
should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
17. Sew rows together as shown in diagram 20.
Measurement check Unit should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".
18. Press, label Emerging Gem Block 2 and set aside.
To make Gems Block 3 sew the following together:
19. Unit 8, Unit 6, Unit 9. See diagram 21 for
placement. Press and label Row 1. Measurement check Unit
should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
20. Unit 7, one 4 1/2" square Fabric D, Unit 6. See
diagram 22 for placement. Press and label Row 2.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
21. One 4 1/2" square Fabric A, Unit 7, Unit 8. See
diagram 23 for placement. Press and label Row 3.
Measurement check Unit should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
22. Sew rows together as shown in diagram 24.
Measurement check Unit should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".
23. Press, label Emerging Gem Block 3 and set aside.
