The Camera Doctor is pleased to publish our first electronic newsletter, and we welcome you to our e-mail list. We hope to make this a useful and fun publication including news of what's happening at the shop, upcoming classes and events, special promotions, and features. We're slowly building a subscriber list, so if you know a friend who might be interested, you can forward this newsletter to him or her by clicking the link above. We'd appreciate it! We will of course always respect your privacy and not share any of your personal information.

Upcoming Classes

We have two classes coming up later in the summer that may interest you. On July 29 and August 2 (a Tuesday and a Saturday) we will be offering a two-session class on 35mm photography. If you have an old 35 lying around, or would like to explore this classic camera that shaped the photography of the 20th century, this hands-on class will teach you everything you need to know. We'll look at examples of the different types from our extensive collection, and you will learn how to load and operate your camera (or if you don't yet have one, we'll loan you one!) During the rest of the week, you'll be asked to shoot a roll of film and have some prints made for discussion in the Saturday morning class. Click here for more info.

The fourth offering of our very popular Toy Camera class will take place on Saturday, September 6. This hands-on class will show you the charms of Holgas and Dianas and other plastic fantastic Chinese boxes, and get you familiar with both the cameras and their unique approach to photography. You'll get a chance to do some shooting during class, and will see the results before you go home. We'll also show you some more advanced techniques. More information is here.

Darkroom Supplies and Equipment

Increasingly our customers are setting up their own home darkrooms, looking for the experience and control you can enjoy by processing and printing your own photos. If you're interested in exploring this extension of your photographic hobby, we have the equipment and supplies you need, from tanks to chemicals, paper to enlargers. Ask us about it the next time you come in.

Camera of the Month

Each month we'll feature one toy or vintage camera here, to introduce you to the wide variety of film cameras that are still available today, at reasonable prices. This month's featured camera is the Canon Canonet, a miniature rangefinder made by Canon for 12 years in the 1960s and early 1970s. Lightweight and responsive, it's an ideal street-shooter, with available apertures to f 1.7. The QL-17 was a particularly popular model, due to its "quick-load" feature. It is an automatic camera with built-in light meter and shutter priority capability, and can also be used without battery in a total manual mode. Its 40 mm fixed lens is pin-sharp and wide-angle enough for great range without distortion. It takes any 35mm film and its auto function can handle from ISO 50-800. This sweet, smooth baby feels great in your hands. You'll find more technical information and links here.
