Variable Star
(12" finished block, Make one block)

(A) Black
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", then cut twice diagonally
Cut 4 squares 4 1/2"

(B) Green
Cut 1 square 5 1/4", then cut twice diagonally

(E) Purple
Cut 2 squares 5 1/4", then cut twice diagonally

(D) Yellow
Cut 1 square 4 1/2"

Assembly & Block Construction of the Variable Star

1. With right sides together sew one (1) Black (A) quarter square triangle to one (1), Purple (E) QST. Repeat 3 more times for a total of 4. Label Unit 1. See diagram 1.

2) With right sides together sew one (1) Purple (E) and one (1) Green (B) quarter square triangle together referring the diagram 2. Repeat 3 more times for a total of 4. Label Unit 2.

3) Sew one (1) Unit 1 to one (1) Unit 2. See diagram 3 for placement. Repeat 3 more times for a total of 4. Label Unit 3.

4) Measurement check – Block should measure 4 1/2" square

5) On opposite sides of one (1) Unit 3 sew one (1) Black (A) 4 1/2" square. Row 1 complete.

6) Measurement check – Row should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2"

7) On opposite sides of one (1) Yellow (D) 4 1/2" square sew one (1) Unit 3. Row 2 complete.

8) Measurement check – Row should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2"

9) On opposites of one (1) Unit 3 sew one (1) Black (A) 4 1/2" square. Row 3 complete.

10) Measurement check – Row should measure 4 1/2" x 12 1/2"

11) Sews rows together referring to block construction diagram.

12) Block should measure 12 1/2" square
