Border Block and Finishing Instructions

Moonlight Dancers
Finished Quilt size – 60" x 74"
Border Block instructions

“Summer Star”
(4" finished block, Make 52 blocks)
**Two different sets 
22 blocks for top and bottom, 30 blocks for the right and left side
cutting instructions for all 52 blocks

(A) Black
Cut 3 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally
Cut 2 squares 4 1/2" 
Cut 13 squares 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally

(B) Green
Cut 13 squares 5 1/4", cut twice diagonally

(F) Blue
Cut 29 squares 4 7/8", cut once diagonally

Assembly & Block Construction of the Summer Star Block



1. Sew one (A) Black QST to one (B) Green QST. Refer to diagram 1 for placement.

2. To the unit just sewn in Step 1 sew one (F) Blue HST. See diagram 1 for placement.

3. Measurement check....Block should measure 4 1/2" 

4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 twenty one (21) more times for a total of 22. Label Summer Star Top and Bottom Blocks.

5. Sew one (B) Green QST to one (A) Black QST. Refer to diagram 2 for placement.

6. To the unit just sewn in Step sew one (F) Blue HST. See diagram 2 for placement.

7. Measurement check....Block should measure 4 1/2" 

8. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 twenty nine (29) more times for a total of 30. Press and label Summer Star Right and Left side blocks.

9. Sew one (A) Black HST to one (F) Blue HST. Refer to diagram 3 for placement.



10. Repeat Step 9 five more times for a total of six Corner Blocks.

11. Press and label Corner blocks.

12. Measurement check....Blocks should measure 4 1/2".

13. Referring to the Border Block Top Diagram sew one (1) Corner block along with eleven (11) of the Summer Star Top and Bottom blocks together as shown. Press and label Border Block Top.



14. Referring to the Border Block Bottom Diagram sew eleven (11) of the Summer Star Summer Star Top and Bottom blocks and one (1) Corner block as shown. Press and label Border Block Bottom.



15. Measurement check....Border Block Row should measure 4 1/2" x 48 1/2”.

16. Referring to the Border Left Side Block diagram sew one (1) Black (A) 4 1/2" square, one (1) Corner block, fifteen (15) of the Summer Star Side blocks together as shown. Press and label Border Block Left Side.

17. Measurement check....Border Block Row should measure 41/2" x 72 1/2".

18. Referring to the Border Right Side Block diagram sew one (1) Corner block, along with and fifteen (15) of the Summer Star Side blocks, and one (1) Black (A) 4 1/2" square together as shown. Press and label Border Block Right Side.

19. Measurement check....Border Block Row should measure 4 1/2" x 72 1/2".


Sashing, Borders and Putting it all together

(A) Black
Sashing
Cut 17 rectangles 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" 

Inner Border pieces. 
Cut 2 strips 2 1/2" x 40 1/2" 
Cut 2 strips 2 1/2" x 58 1/2"

Outer Border pieces 
Cut 2 strips 2 1/2" x 48 1/2" 
Cut 2 strips 2 1/2" x 74 1/2"

(B) Yellow
Cut 6 squares 2 1/2"

(B) Green
Middle Border
Cut 2 strips 2 1/2" x 44 1/2" 
Cut 2 strips 2 1/2" x 62 1/2"

Assembly of Moonlight Dancers

Be sure to refer to color photo (above) and the black and white drawing for block placement.



1. Referring to the Quilt Layout Diagram lay the completed blocks in 4 separate rows of 3 blocks per row.

2. Place one black rectangle (Sashing) on each side of the middle block of the current row as shown in diagram 4.



3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for rows 1, 2, 3 and 4.

4. Referring to diagram 5 to make the sashing rows between the block rows sew the following together: 1 black rectangle, 1 yellow square, 1 black rectangle, 1 yellow square, 1 black rectangle. See diagram 5 for placement. Repeat this step 2 more times for a total of 3 black and yellow sashing units.



5. Sew Black and Yellow sashing unit from Step 4 to the bottom of Row 1. Refer to Quilt Layout Diagram for placement.

6. Sew Row 2 to the bottom of Row 1 Black and Yellow sashing unit. Continue this until all 4 rows have been sewn together.

7. Inner border (BLACK) – Sew one 1 1/2" x 40 1/2" piece to the top and bottom of the quilt.

8. Inner border – (BLACK) Sew one 1 1/2" x 58 1/2"to the right and left sides of the quilt.

9. Middle border – (GREEN) Sew one 2 1/2" x 44 1/2" piece to the top and bottom of the quilt.

10. Middle border – (GREEN) Sew one 2 1/2" x 62 1/2" piece to the right and left of the quilt.

11. Summer Star Top Border– Referring to quilt layout diagram and color picture sew the border row labeled Summer Star Top Border to the top of the quilt top.

12. Repeat Step 11 for the Summer Star Bottom Border.

13. Summer Star Right hand side Border – Referring to quilt layout diagram and color picture sew the border row labeled Summer Star Right side to the right hand side of the quilt top.
14. Repeat Step 11 for the Left Hand Side Summer Star Border.

15. Outer Border – Sew one 2 1/2" x 56 1/2" piece to the top and bottom of the quilt.

16. Outer Border – Sew one 2 1/2" x 74 1/2" piece to the right and left of the quilt.

17. Now you are ready to layer, quilt and add binding. And don't forget a label!
